For this week’s flight plan, we’re staying in the United Kingdom with a short domestic sector from Glasgow Prestwick (EGPK) to London Heathrow (EGLL) aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8 (B38M).
It’s a relatively short flight, but that makes it an excellent route for exploring the complete flight-planning workflow in XPFlightPlanner: generate a route, select departure and arrival procedures, adjust the cruise altitude, review the resulting flight plan, and finally export it to your simulator.
From Scotland to London
Our flight begins at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, on Scotland’s west coast, before heading south toward London Heathrow.
After departure, the aircraft quickly leaves the Scottish coastline behind and settles into a short cruise toward southern England. With the typical changing weather conditions found over the UK, this route can make for an especially atmospheric flight — from a cloudy departure in Scotland to a busy arrival into the London area.
For this flight, we selected the Boeing 737 MAX 8, an aircraft particularly well suited to short- and medium-haul operations like this one.

A great route for learning flight planning
This EGPK–EGLL flight will also serve as the basis for several upcoming XPFlightPlanner tutorials.
Rather than simply presenting the finished route, we’ll progressively show how the flight plan can be customized directly in XPFlightPlanner.
Among the topics we’ll cover:
- How to add a SID to your flight plan
- How to change the cruise altitude
These short tutorials will use the same EGPK–EGLL flight, making it easy to follow the evolution of a flight plan from the initial generated route to the final version ready to fly.
Explore the Complete Flight Plan
You can open the complete flight plan online and explore the route yourself:

The shared flight plan lets you review the route and briefing information before reproducing the flight in your own simulator.
Plan, Customize, Fly
Automatic route generation is only the beginning of flight planning. Depending on the aircraft, weather, ATC instructions, or simply the flight you want to simulate, you may want to modify different parts of the plan before departure.
XPFlightPlanner is designed to make these adjustments straightforward while keeping the complete route visible on the map.
Over the next few publications, we’ll take this Glasgow Prestwick to London Heathrow flight and look more closely at some of these features — starting with adding a SID and changing the cruise altitude.
Until then, you can load the complete EGPK–EGLL flight plan and give the route a try yourself.
Happy flying! ✈️
